Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is tested for with an examination of the ankle for potential injuries.  The Tinel’s test in which the tibial nerve is lightly tapped might also be used.  If there is tingling or pain that spurs the symptoms once again, it is an indication of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.  MRIs are used to capture images of the bones and soft tissue within the body.  MRIs are sometimes used to better understand nerve damage, injury or mass placing pressure along the tibial nerve.  Electromyograms, also referred to as EMGs, consist of two parts in which electrical impulses gauge the function of muscles and nerves.

Splints, casts and braces are also options worth considering.  Splints ensure the foot remains in position to facilitate nerve healing.  In some cases, a combination of physical therapy, orthotics and/or steroid injections successfully treats the syndrome.  Surgery will be considered if the symptoms are severe following attempts with nonsurgical options.  If you have Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome or suspect you have it, you should know help is available at Foot & Ankle Center in Cape Coral, FL.  Reach out to us today at (239) 573-9200 to schedule an appointment.
